something similar also happens in a silo of grain. If you fill a silo with cleaned wheat and start drawing it out of the bottom, you'll notice wheatheads will start working there way to the top and the last bit of wheat to go through will appear very dirty.

I noticed this as a kid when playing with Legos. The bigger ones always ended up at the top of the container when l shook it. My intuition told me that the smaller ones can fall through the holes between bricks easier while the big ones can't. Which I guess is basically the percolation effect mentioned here

If you take the limit of this effect, can it describe buoyancy? Where the tiny nuts are molecules of water, and "shaking" is just the natural brownian motion.
