I honestly don't care about the "Thank you." I do it because that's how I was raised. If someone is behind me or coming out when I'm going in, I hold the door. Being a good human is easy.

Man here) Yes it was engrained into me as a child to hold the door open for others regardless whether or not they acknowledge it. not assuming anything but not getting the acknowledgment from people might be a byproduct of the social norms of your geographical location. Where I live,9 times out of 10 I’ve always gotten a thank you because people here were taught/expected to treat others with respect even at a young age

I'm not a nice person. I'm a kind person. I don't need thanks or acknowledgment to do the things that I do. And I will always say thank you when someone does something kind for me.

I only hold the door open for women, children, and elderly, but the men in my town nope cause they wouldn't do that for me cause I'm "different/odd" I'm a very sweet person if this town would look past the fact that I'm gay (I've lived here since 4th grade I'm now 39) I work at a nursing home, i love spreading love as much as I can, i just won't do it for the men in this town lol
