"Are Emily and Greg More Employable than Lakisha and Jamal? A Field Experiment on Labor Market Discrimination” conducted by economists Marianne Bertrand and Sendhil Mullainathan published a seminal study in 2003 examining hiring discrimination in Boston and Chicago ▪️Method: Researchers mailed 5,000 resumes to 1,250 advertisers for sales, administrative, clerical, and customer service jobs.  ▪️Names Used: They randomly assigned white-sounding names (like Emily, Greg, Brendan, and Anne) and African American-sounding names (like Lakisha, Jamal, Tamika, and Tyrone).  ▪️Results: Resumes with white-sounding names received 50 percent more callbacks than identical resumes with Black-sounding names.    "It doesn't seem like the problem is that they're sitting there going, "'Well, I really don't want Tamika here,'" he said. "The problem seems to be that they read through hundreds of resumes very fast and try to form an impression of the person from the resume. And subconsciously, if you see the name Tamika it's going to bleed into your overall impression, it's going to cue all the negative stereotypes you might have implicitly ... of African Americans, and I think that's hard to challenge." Said Sendhil Mullainathan one of the authors of the study.   Understanding how corporate hiring works is a better strategy than waiting for it to be fair.   Looking for a job is hard enough and when it’s made even harder by invisible obstacles you might think that it’s personal. I assure you, it is not.   You do not need to change your name. The system needs to change but in the meantime, you must know that there are some issues that have nothing to do with you and your job search might be harder than your counterparts. Adjust your job search accordingly and apply to more jobs.   Corporate hiring is unfair and full of biases. This is one of many studies that outline the discrimination in hiring. There is a also a beauty bias, ageism and ableism. Women do not have the same chances of getting hired as a man. A candidate over 50 does not have the same chances as someone in their 30’s.   There are many obstacles to getting a job, it’s important to understand what you are up against so you can plan accordingly.   If you are a hiring manager we need you to do better. #hiring #jobinterview #jobsearch #career #careertipstiktokcontest
