@remydee504: I had the opportunity to interview Dita Von Teese over a decade ago when I was writing for a local rag. I had JUST dipped my toe into being a burlesque performer, so I was still trying to figure out WHY I loved this so much despite being raised to believe that being objectified was "wrong" or "anti-feminist." (Eighteen years of Catholic school also did a number on me but that's a post for another day.) So I asked Dita a question she probably gets a lot: "Have you, any point in your career, ever felt objectified?" Her answer has never left me: "One thing I find interesting is that I think, deep down, we all WANT to be objectified at one point or another." I swear I felt something click into place when she said that. Now with fifteen years of burlesque under my garter belt, I can say with conviction there is NOTHING wrong with wanting to be desired, worshipped, and yes objectified. And burlesque creates a space where we can make this happen SAFELY and -- say it with me, gang -- ✨️CONSENTUALLY!✨️ And I know there are a lot of opinions about Dita within the burlesque community, but I'm still grateful we got to have this conversation.
