@jeffpearlmanauthor: In the 1980’s, the biggest star in women’s volleyball was Flo Hyman. Her life was short, and spectacular. #flohyman #volleyball #japan #net #houston
I loved watching her play. My father made sure that we knew of amazing black athletes growing up. I also attended high school with her niece. Her death was sad, I didn't understand what caused her death back then. Thank you for remembering Flo Hyman.

She was a fantastic player and a wonderful human being. All of us on the ‘88 team underwent testing for Marfan’s after her death.

My 6th grade teacher was a huge volleyball fan and Flo was his favorite player. He had our class make a big banner and he gave it to the team during one of their games before the Olympics started.

Possibly Abe Lincoln had Marfan’s. Numerous NBA players. Important to be screened for with taller skinny athletes.

I remember watching her play and I remember when she passed. I was always concerned about my daughter having Marfans when she started growing. She grew fast (9 inches in 3 yrs), had long arms, long legs and long fingers & toes. The doctors never diagnosed her with it but it was always in the back of my mine due to Flo.

As a young girl (in the 80’s) who loved volleyball when it wasn’t even close to as big as it is now, Flo was my idol.

I remember her. It was rare to have a woman star that played volleyball. We were stunned when she passed away.

These are great stories … this is you in your bag! A large part of journalism is helping a population not forget people that did interesting or spectacular things in obscure areas of society!!! This is a story of a person I remember but wouldve never thought about if not for this video!! THANK YOU BROTHER PEARLMAN! As a former TV News Photojournalist I appreciate this!

Thanks for sharing this story. My son had a bleb on his lung burst and caused it to collapse. He’s okay, but they told him to get tested for Marfans because he’s tall and very thin. I’m going to take this as a sign to do this test as soon as possible.

You have the best stories even though this was a sad one. Jonathon Larson had Marfan. A friend’s son had it and his life was nothing but pain.
