He did NOT SAY divide 20 by ONE HALF he said divide 20 by half. Means half of 20 which is 10 and the answer is 2 then add 30 which is 32

No one but maybe an engineer or a math guy would ever think in those terms. A normal correct way is. Decide the bloody number by half and then add 30. Doing it any other way is number gymnastics and like I said, only a math person or engineer would know why you’d make up a way to come to a different conclusion

The question is deceptive. Divide by half versus divide in half. It is common colloquially for people to say the former when they mean the latter.

It DOES come down to the wording. And those of us who are at least GenX? We were taught that wording of "divide by half", meant to divide by 2. I could probably produce homework assignments in the early 80's that show exactly that. IF he had said "divide by ONE half", that would have easily meant 1/2 or .5. You see? Wording IS everything. Generationally, this is wrong.

I see what you are getting at but because he simply said "divide 20 by half" commonplace knowledge would say to cut in equal parts . Now if he were to have said "divide 20 by A half" then that would explicitly mean divide by .5 . Since this is a riddle or linguistic challenge it relies on commonplace language not mathematical syntax.

i got 32 because "divide 20 by half" means that you take half of 20 (10) and then divide 20 by that number so its 2 and then add 30 which equals to 32

In what universe does "by half" ever imply "one half" and not "half of " with being the subject of the problem, unless itself is one. This problem is just dumb because it requires you to create a new assumption in order to properly solve it.
