@Malam Abubakar Goran Namaye The name Gongola State is derived from River Gongola. The name Jalingo originates from the Fulfulde (Fulani) language, derived from the verb jaalaade (meaning to conquer, overcome, or triumph). It translates to "Triumphant City," "Place of Victory," or "Conquered Land." The name was bestowed when Emir Muhammadu Nya of Muri established his new administrative capital and permanent war camp at the location in 1893. Emir Nya named the settlement Jalingo to signify Muri's decisive victory over the fortified Jukun settlement of Kona in 1892 after a six-year siege. What began as a strategic military post evolved into a major commercial crossroads and became the official capital of Taraba State, Nigeria, when the state was created in August 1991.
