Before you open that door, verify who is on the other side. • Use a peephole or doorbell camera. Never open the door blindly. Look first and determine who is there. • Ask for identification. If someone claims to represent a company, ask for their name, identification, and credentials. • Verify independently. Don’t rely only on the phone number or information they give you. Contact the company directly using its official number and confirm the visit. • Keep the door locked. You can communicate through a closed door, doorbell camera, or intercom. You do not have to open your door just because someone knocked. • Don’t let urgency pressure you. Statements like “This will only take a minute” or “I need to come inside right now” should not override your safety procedures. • Teach your children the same rule. Children should know not to open the door for anyone without a parent or responsible adult giving permission. Your front door is one of the main barriers between your family and someone you don’t know. Once you open it, you give up part of that protection. Take a few extra seconds. Look. Ask. Verify.
