I remember a girl who came from a salafi family would show up to picture day to school with bone straight hair. I asked why she took off her hijab she said picture day and family weddings she gets a pass and only if her hair is straightened 😭😭

My mom too. To her, straightened hair > brushed out curls > curly hair. She thinks we’re delusional/ coping when we call our curly hair beautiful. I think part of the obsession with hijab and buzzcut our parents have is internalised anti blackness.
