Why are you texting your boss if your reaction is severe enough to need to go to a hospital? 🤔 Do people honestly prioritize their bosses over their own health? People need to learn to care for themselves first. This is insanity to me.

My response to that text would be “PLEASE CALL 911 especially if your throat is closing up!”

I had to call 911 for an intense kidney stone. Manager, as I was being loaded to the ambulance asked “did you work at all today? I need to adjust your time and give you a point.”

For me,the red flags start at the very beginning when the employee feels they need to go into so much detail about why they aren’t feeling well and can’t come in. That’s emblematic of the toxic culture. All that should be necessary is a text saying they are taking sick time and can’t come in

Many years ago when I was managing a bar we had a staff member have a severe medical incident. We called an ambulance immediately and I closed the bar for the night. Put a sign on the door and a message on the answering machine apologising that we were closed and told my staff they could either go home or hang around the bar and have a few drinks and wait for news while being paid for their whole shift regardless. When we found out that he hadn’t made it I did everything I could to connect them all to mental health resources and other support and sent flowers and food delivery gift cards to his partner. Even then I felt like I hadn’t done enough. To try and keep someone who could be dying at work or make them find their replacement and then threaten their job is fucking disgusting

My stepfather died. His wife asked me to notify his family. I told my manager I had to take a day because of the death. He sent condolences and told me to log off and take as much time as I needed. I’m so grateful for my current work situation.

Meanwhile I had a colleague reach out to me today saying she wasn’t feeling well and wanted to go to urgent care. My response: Sounds like a good plan! Feel better soon!

To ask the employee to find their own replacement while they are headed to the emergency room is the ultimate insult. Being out of town is not an excuse, that's what they made cell phones for.

Sorry, but if I were having an allergic reaction, I wouldn’t be concerned with texting my boss. Hospital first, text later. Much later.

This is insane. Why do so many people not understand how serious these allergies are?? Delayed care could mean death

“I have a medical emergency, you are the manager, I trust you can handle the situation to find cover, I’ll turn off my phone now as I am walking into the hospital, I’ll text you (if I’m not dead) when I feel better! Thank you for your reassuring words”

Former manager at my job had a sudden violent stomach bug and was told to get over it and open the store at any cost because we had a district evaluation. She vomited everywhere and quit on the spot when the district manager came in. Everyone acted shocked and offended that she would walk out on the job. She barely made more than $12 an hour.

My work refused to provide any documentation about an overpayment and put a small note on my payslip that met the bare-legal requirement for notification. So now I'm taking a week paid sick leave and then I'm giving minimum effort from then on. If they're a minimum employer, I'm a minimum employee
