The song is widely interpreted as being about the band’s former drummer, Scott Raynor, who was dismissed from blink-182 in 1998 due in part to his struggles with alcohol. Its lyrics — referencing reckless drinking and the “loss of a good friend” — are often viewed as thinly veiled allusions to his departure, though Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge have never confirmed this. In a 2001 interview with Absolute Punk, Scott reflected on his exit, quipping: “Music turned into music business, and I wasn’t ready to deal with the game. And I was always the one saying ‘let’s go this way’ and they wanted to go ‘that way,’ and so did everyone else surrounding the band.
