its a lil more nuanced than this, openai scooped the problem bc they heard that two mathematicians buckmaster an alpoge were close to a solution to a stepping stone of the problem. Alpoge works for anthropic and buckmaster has been working with him on a proof to this stepping stone using openai models. Hearing this openai rushed to outdo anthropic and spent millions of dollars to solve the problem, the issue becomes how they came to the solution and if they used buckmasters chats to arrive at it which is highly likely considering they offered him to author the paper of the solution if alpoge wasnt on it and if he included openai internal model resolved the problem. So the solution can be built on stolen work and the motivation is to gain press that Openai is the better model. Normally mathematicians stay away from a problem others are working on to keep the community healthy but openai has demonstrated that ai is capable and simultaneously serves no one but the ones with ownership over it, which is a horrible precedent to set for contemporary ai especially since the best models with the most resources are all privatized. kind of a tldr breakdown pls look jnto it yourself. Terrance Tao stated that alpoge and buckmasters proof could have very well broken through to a complete solution to the problem as well.

im pretty sure ai can't create its own thoughts and ideas right? it just regurgitates concepts

doesn't really describe fluids. NS is forces applied as a continuous function, real incompressible fluids are made up of discrete particles. singularities in NS happen at sub particle resolution, so in real CFD they switch to discrete particle sims for microcurrents/eddies. it's known that NS blows up, and the millennium question is "does a smooth configuration of NS exist." oai brute forced a counter example satisfying statement C. the existence and smoothness problem is still technically unsolved, and is probably unsolvable. the clay institute millennium problems are meant to drive interest in math. proof checkers like lean are controversial because brute forcing them alongside coding agents produces incomprehensible proofs, and lean has historically been prone to kernel bugs producing false positives.

Have a look at the two scientist who actually solved it and openai landed on the same answer around the same time randomly which is sus and when the two scientist asked the lead researcher at OpenAI about if the model used their chats to train itself (massive issue of privacy if it did) and they didn’t answer… also they used 300 billion tokens / 20mil 😂💀

why shouldnt it be solvable by AI?

I mean, I haven't read too much about it, but I just feel like the AI is just the super efficient worker that had leverage of thousands of knowledgeable experts, idk. Also I think you caught a cold right, felt that nose strain sound ._.

If your a mathematician, and you're going to use AI, then make your own AMD taalas style rack setup. In a space that can't even leak a gravitational wave.

Actually that problem was allegedly “stolen” from a Turkish mathematician, they have been working on the problem for a while now and they apparently used ai in the process and the answer ai gave is like 80% same as that mathematician’s work which is shady
