Thank you for saying this. As a 27 year old, sometimes it feels like gaslighting when previous generations place such emphasis on budgets and savings…there’s no money to save because everything’s so expensive 🙃

$365 for my first apt in 2011. Had two part time jobs, my husband had a job, all min wage…we saved $6k without even really trying in maybe 2 years…enough to buy a Mitsubishi eclipse in great condition…now I make $20 an hour full time…can’t keep my head above water.

I do understand that the economy is expensive, but I have two younger children. I have a decent paying job. My fiance has a better paying job that I do. We do not get any extra benefits, neither one of our jobs offer it, so we pay out of pocket for any appointments, etc. And we are doing okay. We don't go after our wants all the time, we don't live above our means, which I personally see a bunch of people doing.

The difference between back then and now is there was housing for all types of walks in life. Cater to all income. Someone that was a waitress can buy a house because they had houses to purchase from her income.

Our car was broken into. The repairs were out of our budget, of course we have no savings, but it was less damage than our deductible so we had to repair out of pocket. That created a catalyst that made us late on rent. We owe last month and this month plus fees, totaling just under $3600. One emergency created a deficit of nearly four grand in one month, from ONE EXPENSE. THAT'S JUST ONE BILL. How is ANYONE living paycheck to paycheck supposed to keep up with that?! That was six months rent in my first apartment less than 15 years ago. 🥺
