Here's what makes them so baffling: not one surviving Roman text so much as mentions them, and they never appear in any Roman art. The holes are all different sizes, no two objects are quite alike, and experts have proposed everything from knitting tools to surveying instruments, candle holders, dice, and ritual objects — with no agreement at all.
