@empty.glances: It’s actually crazy how somebody can go from being a complete stranger to becoming one of the main characters in your life. There was literally a point where you didn’t know their voice, their laugh, their favorite food, what annoys them, what makes them happy, what they look like when they’re tired, or what they’re going to say before they even say it. You might’ve walked into that first conversation thinking absolutely nothing of it. Maybe you met through friends, at school, at work, online, or through some completely random circumstance that almost didn’t happen. And now you can look back and realize that one ordinary interaction quietly created hundreds or thousands of memories. That’s the part that gets me. 😭 There are moments happening in your life right now that don’t feel significant yet because you haven’t seen what they’re going to become. The person you casually said hello to might eventually become your best friend. The random date you almost canceled might become the person you marry. Someone you assumed would only be around temporarily might end up knowing you better than people you’ve known your entire life. And sometimes the opposite happens too. Someone who once felt permanent becomes somebody you haven’t spoken to in years, and you’re left looking back at the beginning wondering how two people could travel such an enormous distance from that first moment. That’s what makes looking back so surreal. You know the entire story now, but the versions of you standing there on day one had absolutely no idea. They didn’t know about the inside jokes that hadn’t been created yet, the late-night conversations that hadn’t happened, the trips you hadn’t taken, the arguments you hadn’t survived, the photos you hadn’t taken, or the ways you were eventually going to change each other’s lives. If you could walk back into that first meeting with everything you know now, you’d probably notice every tiny detail differently. But maybe it’s better that we don’t know. Part of what makes relationships so extraordinary is watching significance develop in real time. One day they’re “that person I met the other day,” and then somehow, without noticing exactly when it happened, they become somebody whose existence divides your memories into before I knew you and after.
