KLM flight KL735 was operating from Amsterdam to Curaçao on Thursday when a power bank caught fire in the Business Class cabin while the aircraft was over the Atlantic. The cabin crew extinguished the fire, but the captain decided to turn the aircraft around and return to Amsterdam Schiphol. The Boeing 777-300ER landed safely at Schiphol at around 8:40 p.m. Images from inside the cabin show scorching around a Business Class seat, the sidewall and window area. The story took an unusual turn on Friday when RTL Nieuws reported that the power bank belonged to Camiel Eurlings, KLM’s former president and CEO, citing multiple sources aboard the aircraft and others familiar with the incident. KLM has not confirmed the passenger’s identity, citing privacy. A passenger seated nearby told RTL that the power bank was being charged when it caught fire. KLM says it is still investigating whether the device was being charged at the time. KLM allows power banks to be carried in the cabin but prohibits passengers from using or charging them during the flight.
