Control issues coupled with the need for significance. Very symptomatic of someone who lacked both as a child which is why they need both in later life.

I would say too that someone with control issues may feel out of control of themselves and their emotions if they weren’t taught how to regulate themselves or had to always be “the good kid” that didn’t/couldn’t have melt downs or tantrums. They didn’t learn internal regulation so they try to “regulate” externally. Which shows up as control.

Of course it comes from that, but no one should control their partner to an extreme degree. And very few people can cope with someone where they are constantly being controlled... you want a relationship built on trust.
