The British didn’t start slavery. They didn’t even start the transatlantic slave trade: that would be the Portuguese. If the British were only interested in money, why would they spend and absolute fortune paying off British plantation owners in the Caribbean? Also the Royal Navy anti-slavery actions didn’t come cheap in treasure nor blood. The Royal Navy was absolutely dominant at the time: they literally ruled the waves. If there were no moral imperative, they could have just stopped everybody else trading in slaves.

Robin :
capitalism was and is more profitable. no clothing. no feeding, no medical, no housing, so now we get them to make everything then pay for it and capitalists keep the profits and get rich

Also took over 150 years after the abolition of slavery for the UK to finish compensating the slavers. I think it was 2015. That’s 11 years ago🤔🤔🤔

Great analysis but I feel like it was heavily missing the philosophical development in Brittain of the time. Enlightenment rationalism and good old British utilitarianism which evolved into liberalism. I believe there was a reason in the synchronicity of these events. The British intellectuals definitely saw this as being a justification of their thought.

Wasn’t the Industrial Revolution also behind abolishing slavery? It was no longer economical to enslave people, as factories and steam were introduced? You could argue that American civil war started because two different economical models were competing.

They were never first, Haiti was the first country to outlaw it, and Denmark did so 40 years before Britain.

Exactly, they stopped everybody else from IMPORTING slavery because they introduced EXPORTING slavery to their colonies.

Britain didn’t end the slave trade, they tried to stop it but couldn’t. They stopped because they wasn’t making as much money out of it you said, however spent huge sums of money to try and stop something that wasn’t making money. Could have the UK just walked away from slavery and just let it continue as most of the countries around at that time didn’t want it ended at all. Do you think that would of been a much better idea to just walk away and say we are not doing this anymore and let everyone else carry on.

hmm my ancestors were abolitionists bro we were serious about ending it for moral reasons 😔 we poured our entire life and our own money into doing it, just like I am this time.

Great insight. Let’s also not forget that Adam Smith argued in his Wealth of Nations, 1776, argued that paying workers a minimal amount was far more profitable than keeping slaves - see book 1 chapter 8 and book 3 chapter 2. Larger businesses were starting to realise that people would indenture themselves for a sniff of perceived freedom.

The British started the process ending slavery because of the Haitian Revolution. Part of the reason they weren't making as much money off Slavery is because they tried to stop selling slaves to the French because they were dominated colonial trade in the Carribean. Slave Traders sold on the black market to the French and the British government missed out on all that tax revenue. they figured if they starved out the French colony they already had enough slaves to populate their colonies and eventually maybe take over Haiti.
