@hr_explained: @Caitlin | Recruiter give her a follow. Her video was never only about coffee. Appearing too casual or having distractions during your job interview aren’t things I’d recommend. And even if 90% of the time a coffee isn’t a big deal, why take 10% risk? If you took the time to apply for a job and go to an interview, why take unnecessary risk? I understand a lot of you want the world to be a certain way. But until the world is that way, most employers do want to perceive you’re taking the interview seriously and demonstrate self awareness. Bringing a dripping or very scented coffee can appear too casual or distracting. So can chewing gum, clacking your nails on the table, what you choose to wear, if you’re wearing anything fragranced or if you have body odor. The list goes on. Employers want to believe you want the job, are taking the process seriously, and aren’t demonstrating anything that MIGHT be a small indicator or an issue with your judgement. And in the event there are a few good candidates who interview well, any little thing you do or don’t do could be evaluated. Again, why take on risk? #humanresources #hrtiktok #interviewtips #corporatelife #greenscreen

Don’t bring anything in that room that doesn’t help you achieve your goal. Starbucks is not achieving the goal of getting you that job. People can’t even take polite advice from professionals

If a business won’t hire me because I brought a drink then I’m not sure it’s the best place to work.

This generation is cooked. The amount of people willing to risk losing a job opportunity over an iced coffee is wild. They really are a decline from the pervious generation.

Half of these comments I would not hire. I’m suuuuper casual to work for on a day to day basis. Genuinely, I’m so chill. But it’s weird af to bring an iced coffee into an interview, even online. I often negotiate multi-million dollar healthcare contracts. I need to know you’re going to show up to those meetings, even virtually, with the utmost professionalism. I also look like Adam Sandler running errands but I do my hair and makeup and put on pearls for important meetings. It simply shows me you don’t know when to turn it on and off. Day to day, I’m not even turning on our cameras.

If there’s two candidates, and you bring the iced coffee and the other equally qualified one did not, you’re basically giving the job to the other person.

I don’t understand why you would even consider bringing an iced coffee. It’s like bringing in an egg McMuffin and eating it during the interview. Absurd.

I’m a hiring manager. If you walk in with a coffee it says to me, I’m not serious about this job. Maybe some where else wouldn’t care. You’re welcome to go try and find that place, but doubtful it’ll be here. Good luck on the job hunt.

Hiring teams are naturally distrusting. Don’t give me any reason to question your judgement. You can get a coffee on your way home. You will be okay for an hour without your Starbucks.

It’s funny because my brother in law was just hired in a finance firm and amount the many perks he has now, they have a beer dispenser, I’m sure they could care any less if someone shows up with a iced coffee

I don’t know why everyone is so up in arms about this. When you show up to an interview, bring yourself, a padfolio with your resume & interview notes, and maybe a purse… and that’s it. How hard can it be to have a 1 hour interview without a coffee in your hand?! (And that’s coming from someone with an emotional support Owala 😂😭)

I’m a hiring manager. I would not mind this consciously but oftentimes when I’m between two candidates it comes down to the energy they brought and how I felt talking to them. And it may come down to something that small. Why risk it?

She was also very specific in saying how this is primarily advice for “fortune 500 super buttoned up corporations.” The level of formality and expectations in those kinds of companies is vastly different than a more casual start-up, restaurant, etc kind of interview. But I still agree with you completely. No matter what kind of job it is, if you’re serious about being hired, you can never be too over-dressed, over-prepared-over-polite, etc. You’re trying to make a good impression as one of the probably dozen candidates they have and presentation is everything.
