@jrzygrldj: Before you say people are “reaching” about the Converse ad…you need to understand the history. When some Black Americans saw that image, they didn't just see shoes hanging. They saw imagery that carries a painful historical association with lynching and racial terror in America. And that's where “Strange Fruit” comes in. Billie Holiday's Strange Fruit wasn't about fruit. The phrase is a haunting metaphor for Black bodies hanging from trees after lynchings. So no, I'm not telling you that Converse intentionally created racist imagery. I can't establish their intent from an image. But intent doesn't erase historical context. And sometimes the lesson isn't simply, “Was this racist?” The better question is: How can the same image mean absolutely nothing to one person…and immediately evoke generations of history for another? That's why we learn history. Not just to memorize dates. To understand what we're looking at TODAY. Now that you know what “Strange Fruit” means, look at the Converse ad again. Yeah, Converse made a video ad… for South Korea… years ago… where if you pause it… zoom WAYYY in… and crop out 50% of the image… it makes a “dog whistle” for people who don’t even exist in SOUTH KOREA. Thank you for explaining the meaning of strange fruit. I didn’t know that the song existed but I know of Billie Holiday. I also immediately saw this as someone hanging and someone in a robe but you educating me on the song made me do my research more on it which led me to reading the lyrics and that is such a powerfully written song and I also don’t know how people could miss it’s talking about lynching. It’s very blunt and descriptive when it talks about the way bodies looked and smelled. Companies are signaling dog whistles left and right and expecting us to be dumb enough to still believe their gaslighting explanations.
