Bunker Trouble? Here's How to Escape with Confidence Every Time ⛳🏖️ For many golfers, nothing raises the heart rate quite like seeing their ball disappear into a bunker. But here's the good news: a bunker shot doesn't have to ruin your scorecard. In fact, once you understand the fundamentals, escaping the sand can become one of the most predictable shots in your game. The biggest misconception is thinking you need to hit the golf ball cleanly. In most greenside bunker shots, you actually want the club to move through the sand, allowing the sand to carry the ball onto the green. Here's a simple step-by-step guide to help you get out with confidence. 1️⃣ Open Your Stance Start by aiming your feet and shoulders slightly left of the target (for right-handed golfers). This open stance encourages the club to travel along the proper path while allowing the clubface to stay open through impact. A stable, athletic posture is just as important as your swing. 2️⃣ Position the Ball Forward Place the ball just inside your lead foot. This setup helps the club enter the sand before reaching the ball, creating the explosion of sand that lifts the ball onto the green. When the ball is too far back in your stance, you're far more likely to hit the ball first, resulting in low, hard shots that fly over the green. 3️⃣ Keep Your Weight on Your Lead Foot Set approximately 70% of your weight on your front foot and keep it there throughout the swing. Maintaining forward pressure helps create the descending strike needed to enter the sand consistently. Avoid shifting your weight backward during the downswing, as this often leads to thin or bladed bunker shots. 4️⃣ Open the Clubface Before taking your grip, rotate the clubface slightly open. An open clubface increases the effective loft and allows the club's bounce to glide through the sand instead of digging too deeply. Let the bounce do the work rather than trying to force the club into the sand. 5️⃣ Focus on the Sand, Not the Ball This is the most important concept of all. Instead of trying to strike the golf ball directly, imagine a spot about 1–2 inches behind the ball and make that your target. The club enters the sand first, creating an explosion that carries the ball out of the bunker. You're moving the sand—and the sand moves the ball. 6️⃣ Make a Full Follow-Through Many golfers slow down because they're afraid of hitting the ball too far. Don't. Commit to the shot and finish your swing completely. A full follow-through keeps the club moving through the sand and produces much more consistent results. Deceleration is one of the fastest ways to leave the ball in the bunker. Common Mistakes to Avoid ❌ Standing too upright, which limits your ability to swing through the sand. ❌ Playing the ball too far back, causing clean contact instead of an explosion shot. ❌ Closing the clubface, which removes the bounce and makes digging more likely. ❌ Trying to

Common Mistakes to Avoid ❌ Standing too upright, which limits your ability to swing through the sand. ❌ Playing the ball too far back, causing clean contact instead of an explosion shot. ❌ Closing the clubface, which removes the bounce and makes digging more likely. ❌ Trying to "lift" the ball with your hands instead of letting the loft and bounce do the work. Practice with Purpose The next time you're at the practice bunker, don't focus on where the ball lands. Instead, practice drawing a line in the sand and making swings that consistently enter the sand 1–2 inches in front of that line. Once you can control where the club enters the sand, you'll build the consistency needed to handle almost any bunker lie. Remember, even the best players find bunkers during a round. What separates them is confidence—not perfection. With the right setup, a committed swing, and trust in the club's bounce, you can turn one of golf's most intimidating shots into a reliable scoring skill. ⛳ What's your biggest challenge in bunker play—getting the ball out on the first try, controlling distance, or stopping the ball close to the pin?
