I’ve noticed this problem as a Black British writer. Although not set in the UK, I am currently writing a book featuring a Caribbean family who run legitimate rum and hair/beauty businesses with the parents in a loving marriage and their daughters having their own personalities and ambitions rather than being defined by harmful stereotypes. I’ll be posting more about them this week and I hope to see black stories outside crime and deviance highlighted more.

They’re excluded - either from funding, broadcasting or even writing approvals. Unless we get black funding it from start to finish including broadcasting like issa rae or abbot elementary, UK black stories are gonna stay hood

I think because we make stories about our blackness rather than making stories and the characters just happen to be black.

Higher Learning is a coming of age webseries! It follows an Ethiopian British girl navigating her first day as a fresher. Josh Tedeku stars in it! The link is in my bio to watch 🔗
