@kpixtv: Over the past 18 months, San Jose has seen a 32% decrease in the number of people living on the streets and in encampments. Mayor Matt Mahan credits the nearly 1,800-person decline in unhoused people to expanded resources like added shelter beds, increased encampment sweeps and new “No Encampment Zones.” City officials are now using the collection system UrbanLogiq to collect data reported every quarter instead of every two years. They say increased reports mean resources are allocated to better serve city residents’ present needs. Even with the positive result, some critics, like Sandy Perry from the Unhoused Response Group, say the root of the problem has yet to be addressed: a rising cost of living that minimum wage earners just cannot afford.
