Denim originated in 16th century France as "serge de Nîmes," but became iconic and mainstream when Levi's patented riveted work pants in 1873. However, denim also has a much overlooked and forgotten past. Enslaved people wore an indigo dyed, homespun, course cotton fabric which added further discrimination towards an already brutalized people. There is a PBS documentary which dives deeper into this that I recommend you checking out. What makes quality denim? It's all about the 3x1 twill weave (that diagonal pattern you see), indigo dye that sits on the surface (why it fades beautifully with wear), and construction details. Look for 100% cotton, selvedge edges, chain-stitched hems, bar tacks at stress points, and copper rivets. Skip anything with elastic, it shortens the lifespan. And PSA: stop washing your jeans so much. It fades them faster and wears them out. #Denim #Laundry #Fashion
