It costed you 22$, To buy DLR on cad side is 10$ commission, selling it on US side is also 10$ commission plus small fees. But yes it’s the best way to do it. It’s called Norberts gambit.

Norbit‘s gambit has been around for I don’t know since the start of those exchange traded funds. It’s only worthwhile if you’re looking for larger dollar amounts and you’re willing to wait and transfer the money later but, you just looking for you know $5000 in exchange currency exchange exchange it somewhere beyond with your day. Or get a US dollar credit card or a use your tangerine or Scotiabank card in a Bank of America ATM in the states and the same base rates. Seems to be a silly thing unless you’re talking about $50-$100,000 in trades.

You’re saving the 1-1.5% FX fee most banks charge…one important thing is to ask how long the journaling takes. Same day? Most allow you to do it online.
