Per “Mr. MoCo” Alex Tsironis: Nick's Diner and I are both Greek, were both born in 1982 and, until tonight, neither of us had ever experienced dinner at Nick’s. For the first time in its history, the longtime Wheaton diner offered dinner service, so I had to be there. Dinner began at 4:30pm, which is exactly when I walked in. The diner, a true throwback to years past, was full within the first 15 minutes. The Family Dinner Night menu featured something for just about every taste, including Maryland crab and chicken noodle soups, salads, quesadillas, tacos, fajitas, pastitsio, Salisbury steak, grilled salmon, a Cubano, burgers and a meatball provolone sub. I sampled a little from each part of the menu, ordering the Cubano, pastitsio and Salisbury steak platter. I washed it all down with a strawberry lemonade and finished with a strawberry streusel cheesecake. I brought the leftovers home, where they were quickly devoured by my family. Not one dish fell behind the others, but to my surprise, the Cubano ended up being my favorite. I ate most of it while I was still at the diner. I couldn’t stop. This is an old-school diner, so you aren’t going to find carefully styled plates made for social media, and that’s part of its charm. I also asked for everything in to-go containers because I knew my stay wouldn’t be long. I hadn’t been to Nick’s in many years, simply because I don’t live particularly close to Wheaton and it’s harder for me to make it there for breakfast. But it remains the kind of perfect greasy spoon everyone should try. There just aren’t many places like it left around here. Nick’s Diner is located at the intersection of Veirs Mill Road (11199 Veirs Mill Rd.) and University Boulevard. Formerly Joe’s Diner, it was taken over by the Markopoulos family in 1982 and has now served generations of customers for approximately 44 years. #Wheaton #Maryland #NicksDiner @NicksDiner
