Are children in the US not checked by doctors and specialist before they go into school, if they’re ready?

I have been a childcare provider for 30 yrs. I have helped many families make this decision. I always tell parents that no one has ever regretted giving more time to be a kid but many families regret going before they were ready. I always say take the yr if you are questioning what to do.

As a former preschool teacher of 30 years I want to thank you. You absolutely did the best thing for your daughter. Children need to learn social skills and how to play and problem solve before they are ready for the

The only thing I don’t like about redshirting is that it can make the age gap in each class so wide. Like someone who chooses not to redshirt their August birthday sends their young 5 year old (or sometimes old 4 depending on start date) to K and then someone who redshirts sends their 6 year old to the same class. It can make the gap in knowledge and ability wider than if all the kids were closer in age. Especially for people who are redshirting kids with spring birthdays and their kid is finishing K at 7 years old when some are 5.5.

I am a little confused because in Ontario kindergarten starts at 4. I didn’t send my daughter to jk (junior kindergarten) she started in sk (senior kindergarten). Do you guys only have one year of kindergarten?

See I did the opposite. My son’s birthday is at the end of July and the cutoff is August 1st. I put him in the class he’s supposed to go into and he’s the youngest but he is, academically, in the top 5 of his class and socially I couldn’t imagine him being in the younger class whatsoever. He’s leaps and bounds further than his peers that are in the grade below. I think it completely depends on the child. He’s always been interested in learning also!

I am an educator and you can absolutely tell the youngest in a junior high classroom. I held my August-born son and am so thankful. He is in eighth grade now and it has been so good for him!!

Here in Ontario everyone born in the same year stays together. So we can not hold kids back and start older. If you choose to start at an older age then they still join kids born in their year. meaning they would have missed kindergarten and will start in grade 1.

Here in Ontario there is zero concept of holding your kid back. If your birthday is Dec 31 you start in September. If it’s Jan 1 you start next September. If there’s any deviation from this it’s getting your kid tested so they can start early, if their birthday is early January. But even that is very rare.

I feel this is my soul! My son is an Aug birthday plus he has significant special needs. We always intended on having his start K at 6… well our school department wouldn’t allow us to keep him back they said he’s 5 before sept 1 he must got to K… fast forward I got a lawyer and fought them and we WON! He just turned six and just started kindergarten id fight them all over again. A Mama always knows what’s best for her babies. 🥰

Both my brother and I turned 5 in August and started school at 5. We both feel that we should have waited until 6 (he is now 62 and I am 58). It was tough being the youngest girl (especially with the ways boys/girls tease). My brother also felt that he was behind the other boys and when they would make comparisons, he was embarrassed and really struggled with the other boys as well as just not being as mature as the others. My daughter skipped a grade. She is now 33 and says she wishes she hadn’t skipped a grade as she also felt behind the other girls and also that they didn’t want to be friends with her because she was so young. Great decision!

In the UK we start a year earlier so at 4. Parents could delay until 5 but they would then miss that first year that's more play-based and join the same class of kids a year later. I like the flexibility of your way!

Yes, I was a December baby but started school early. I was smart academically, but socially I lagged. I hated not being able to get a job and work when I turned 16 or get my permit or license when all my friends had theirs. I couldn’t date. It’s not so bad in the primary school years if you have a smart child but starting them too early will definitely catch up to them later.

We’re in the UK so I assume it works a little differently because generally everyone starts school at 4. My son is late August too and started Reception (our version of Kindergarten) 1 week after turning 4 😳. He’s done so well though, now 5 and in year 1. I was a bit worried beforehand though!
