THE DEATH OF THE FAMILY TABLE IS THE WEAKENING OF A NATION. We have lost something far more valuable than the tradition of eating together. We have lost one of the earliest places where human beings learn to put the needs and wants of a group ahead of their own. Think about it. At the family table, we learn to wait, listen, disagree respectfully, share, compromise, and sometimes sacrifice what we want for what is best for everyone. We learn that silence is not necessarily awkward. We learn that not every moment needs entertainment. We learn that our individual desires are not always the highest priority. The family table is our first training ground for collective responsibility. But television introduced another model of social interaction: scripted actors, rehearsed dialogue, perfectly timed responses, and conversations where nearly every silence is filled. “Television stages the world, then becomes the model for how the world is to be staged.” Over time, we risk confusing entertainment with genuine human connection. Then comes the smartphone. Everyone has their own screen, their own entertainment, their own priorities. Me. Me. Me. And while individual freedom is valuable, a society that forgets collective responsibility becomes vulnerable. Because if we cannot comfortably sit with four family members, listen patiently, tolerate silence, and consider everyone’s needs, how prepared are we to sit with forty strangers and organize around a common cause? How do we build movements? Hold meetings? Resolve disagreements? Demand accountability? Protect vulnerable people? Consider Guyana. Adriana Younge’s death raised profound questions about justice, accountability, and the ability of citizens to sustain a united demand for answers. Consider Azruddin Mohamed, a wealthy opposition political figure who has faced serious legal and political controversy, including allegations of politically motivated treatment. Whatever our political loyalties, we should be capable of organizing around shared principles of fairness, due process, transparency, and justice. A divided population is easier to ignore, manipulate, and control than an organized population. Those seeking to abuse power benefit when citizens cannot cooperate, cannot compromise, and cannot place shared interests above personal convenience. This is why the family table matters. Not because eating together magically creates strong citizens, but because it gives us a daily opportunity to practice the habits that make cooperation possible. Bring back the family table. Put away the phones. Turn off the television. Sit together. Eat together. Listen. Allow silence. Discuss problems. Make decisions together. Teach children that they belong to something greater than themselves. Because a nation capable of sitting together is better prepared to stand together. The strength of a nation begins with the habits we practice at home. — R. S. Chan #justiceforadrianayounge #adrianayounge #guyananews
