i genuinely do not interpret it as kkk imagery. i see a model holding converse shoes, with the converse star incorporated into the lighting. once people started explaining the kkk interpretation i could see what they were referring to. but that’s different from establishing that this was what converse intended. there’s a difference between saying ‘this image can understandably remind people of something horrific’ and saying ‘converse intentionally put kkk/lynching imagery in an advertisement.’ the first is an interpretation of the image and the second is a claim about the company’s intent. and i haven’t seen evidence establishing that intent. it’s also worth remembering that the kkk historically targeted more than just black americans. they also targeted jews, catholics and immigrants. so the historical discussion surrounding the kk is more complicated than some of these posts make it sound. and the fact that converse removed the ad and apologized doesn’t prove that the company intentionally made racist imagery. it demonstrates that the company recognized the image had a serious negative interpretation and decided to take responsibility for putting it out. you can criticize the marketing decision without turning an ambiguous image into proof of a conspiracy
