The job creation you mentioned doesn't factor in jobs created downstream in Scotland's wider technology industry. There is some importance of having this capability inside Scotland rather being dependent on US, especially where your personal data is concerned, AI is not going anywhere anytime soon. There is a way this can be done properly, finding the right locations, forcing developers to build renewable energy generation capability to benefit communities. Things are moving fast and there is a lot of scaremongering on both sides but I'm sure we'll find a way to move forward.

Thanks fie the interesting video and backing stuff up with facts (vv rare on here). Good to see us Aberdeen engineers shaping the conversation on this. There’s defo a place for data centres and AI isn’t going anywhere and not building them isn’t an option as we can’t allow ourselves to be at the mercy of the American AI companies/Gov should they decide to restrict our access (as they just did with Mythos) to the latest models and not having the data centres to run them will leave our future economy very vulnerable. With our abundant energy Scotland is a perfect country but instead of building them on land we should instead build upon Microsoft’s successful subsea data centre trial off Orkney - the seawater cooled the computing equipment and because they used N2 as the atmosphere within the data centre the failure rate of the components was dramatically reduced (some good BBC articles covered this 5 years ago or so). This would allow us to participate in the AI boom without blighting our communities/landscape. The underwater data centre resurfaces https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-54146718

In Switzerland they have a data centre that heats 60,000 houses. So there are ways to benefit from data centres, but only if the benefits are secured for the people in the community. That could also include free high speed internet for everyone in the local community. There is a place for data centres - but nut if it’s used as a resource grab.

One of them were being built next to my house and none of us where I live knew what it was until they’d already taken down half the woods… it’s insane

Genuinely, what would you like to use the land for? Are we short of land? None of the centres will use water evaporating systems, so why bring it up? The really is that AI needs these centres to provide the compute power that people and businesses will require to survive in the future market. Now, I’m not saying that we should accept anything but you’ve added yet another “well researched” video to TikTok that is entirely focused on potential negatives, some of which aren’t even plausible.

At the very minimum residents should be given a full refund on the value of the house pre-data centre. I mean homes are going to be surrounded by massive hulky buildings, be shaded by them, be constantly blasted with noise and have their fresh water messed with.

They want to build an enormous 500 megawatt solar farm near where I live in the Carse of Gowrie on farmland and I suspect this proposal and those like it are directly linked to the plans to build all these data centres. Feels incredibly short sighted.
