@dr.shawna: Have you ever heard of “reproductive time”? This video breakdown this academic concept. Researchers use reproductive time to describe how fertility and uncertainty can reorganize the way time itself feels. And once you add the mental load of tracking, planning, testing, and waiting, it makes sense that TTC can feel all-consuming even on days when “nothing” is happening. For more on that, let’s go to the research! For anyone navigating infertility, trying to conceive, or fertility struggles, what part of the month feels the longest? #learnontiktokcontest #socialscience #tryingtoconceive #LearnOnTikTok

Not enough is said about flipping from “try not get pregnant” to “get pregnant.” It’s like deciding poison is ok now.

Being in academia (with expectations that you'll get tenure before having a baby, or that you can magically make sure you have a baby during the summer) makes this 100x worse.

Oh man, what a relatable idea. Especially as an older mom the infertility and reproductive journey has made me incredibly aware of the age of my body as well.
The longest part for me is between ovulation and menses. Because we keep saying we want to try for another (I had my first after six months of medical intervention) but when ovulation comes, we decide not to. So we punt it to the next month. That's the longest part for me.
Also, pregnancy and motherhood further exacerbate this change in the understanding of time in a way I'm not trained enough to explain except to say my grandmother always said "You never notice the time passing except in the children."

Thank you for this! I talk with my clients all the time about the mental load and the waiting. Infertility can feel like the endless loop but giving language to these experiences can help those going through it feel less alone. Appreciate you sharing your story! 🤍

For anyone who has lived this, what part of the cycle or waiting feels the longest to you?

I spent 2 years on this train then we decided to stop and gave up tracking anything. I believed that it just wasn’t in the cards and decided to stop tracking and thinking and trying. I looked at other aspects of my life and decided to focus on other parts of my health that I had neglected in favour of fertility. Coincidentally, around the time I gave up, I decided to try taking GLP-1 medication for other health related issues. Turns out people with my condition reported a noticeable increase in fertility after taking the medications. There were no concrete studies around this at the time so I was unaware of the anecdotal evidence. My little one is expected to arrive at the beginning of October now and I truly believed I would never be in this place. It is such a hard mental process to be trapped in while tracking fertility.

in my sister's experience, she then had a very complicated high risk pregnancy (with twins) and so the waiting to conceive turned into waiting for the next appointment for reassurance, waiting for them to be born, waiting for them to be out of the NICU, waiting waiting waiting

It’s also difficult to make future plans because you don’t know if you’ll be pregnant or not.

I’m on my 2nd ivf cycle (first one failed). My retrieval was yesterday and I’m currently recovering from that. Everything I plan or even think about doing revolves around my cycle. Right now I’m waiting a week to get the number of embryos that will be biopsied for genetic testing. Then waiting 3 weeks for results. After that waiting for day 1 full flow if I’m lucky enough to have healthy embryos. So can I host friendsgiving or not? Can I plan a weekend getaway or not? Can I plan my birthday party or not? What if I’m grieving some failure in this process? In a way, I grieve every month that passes and have been since we started this journey earlier this year.

As a Fertility expert, I can assure you that you are not alone. 💔 I'm currently working on my dissertation (still pending the final phase of my research), and I can promise you that, with all of the knowledge we have about hormone use, ROS, cortisol....we still don't know most of it. I always said I would not wish IVF on my worst enemy. Or maybe ONLY my worst enemy. Because it's psychological and physical torture. Good luck in your journey.... I'm sorry you're going through this

One of the hardest times for me was waiting for the test results to see if my child would have Down syndrome or any other genetic abnormality. My sister is special needs, my partner and I work with adults with special and we had a lot of conversations about if we would go through with the pregnancy if anything came back positive. This was after I had already had one miscarriage and I was constantly doing mental math.

My heart goes out to you. This deserves its own ring in Dante’s inferno. I went through this for two years and got lucky on my first full round of IVF. They were able to retrieve one good egg. Only one! She is seven now. Hang in there. ❤️

The only timing I really thought about in the moment (that I can remember) was feeling like the years were zooming by and I was physically running out of time to get pregnant. But thinking back on it now, it did feel like juggling time and trying to get it perfect. The months felt long, but the years desperately short. I wonder, after watching this, if this conception of time is different for people who have different pregnancy outcomes?

I have irregular cycles and that has made it even weirder. The year seems so short when you have so few cycles.

Ugh yes I can still figure out where I am in my cycle almost on a dime even though I haven’t been tracking it since I stopped TTC. My partner and I would have a grieving day when I started my period where I was just a shell of myself. I literally thought that if I wanted it enough, it would happen. The “two week wait” makes my heart race.

The waiting. Tracking everything felt like control — until the test was negative. I have 3 kids now, but the first took 3 yrs.
