It’s actually Leucistic and not albino! They feature white, pale, or patchy coats, sometimes displaying gray or brown spots or a distinct head stripe. Leucism is caused by a recessive gene. Both parent squirrels must carry the gene for an offspring to display the trait, meaning siblings in the same litter can still have normal gray coats. While rare globally, certain towns like Brevard, North Carolina, ( and we see Hitchcock has quite a few 😉) have notable local populations of white leucistic squirrels.

When you’re walking the trail, once you get to the red bridge with the matching house, they live back there. I lived up the road for 20+ yrs. There’s a lot of them over there.

Local here, he's not Albino he's a subspecies of the Grey squirrel. You'll find them along Hitchcock creek and through out Roberdel. PROTECTED species they'll throw you under the jail if you mess with him

There is another type of white squirrel in the mountains of North Carolina but they are not related, according to the researchers. Albino squirrels will have pink or very pale eyes. I love seeing them around our neighborhood in Rockingham 🤍🐿️🤍
