I felt it’s also about class. Paul Marshall was wealthy so he was free from suspicion. The mother resented the fact the husband was paying for Robbie’s education. Briony gave her the opportunity to get rid of Robbie. Cecilia is in love with Robbie and sick of the family’s snobbery and gives up her wealthy lifestyle and family for him.
