We received a call from North Kansas City Animal Control about a dog named Papi. He is spicy, and emaciated. He has an incredibly sad story. A Good Samaritan saw Papi in a car- which he was apparently living in with his owner. They called for a welfare check, and his owner was willing to surrender him to animal control. I have no doubt that was an incredibly hard decision, but one that was made selflessly. It is inconceivably hard to let go of a being you love, in order for them to get what they need. That is simultaneously one of the kindest and hardest things a person can do - put the needs of another above their own. Papi is spirited and filled with fight- which is exactly what I love about him. If I’m being honest, Papi is a complete a$$hole- but for all the right reasons. While onlookers may see a behavioral case, I don’t. In my heart I’ve always believed someone’s greatest strength is also their greatest weakness, and vice versa. This also applies to dogs. So while his weakness right now is the way that he acts, I see it as his strength. He is willing to fight for what he loves. His devotion to his owner remains, even though that person isn’t around. And while Papi doesn’t understand why his entire world has been flipped upside down, and he has been thrust into this situation in a shelter that he adamantly doesn’t want… he is rightfully frustrated. The same intensity in which he currently hates the world that surrounds him, demonstrates his capacity to love fiercely. He understands he had it good in life, and misses that. In less than one hour of time, he went from a screaming banshee summoning hells fury on all those around him, to begrudgingly enjoying a neck rub and struggling to keep his eyes open. Same dog, same day - just given a chance and some persistence. He wants to be loved, he’s just mad at the world right now. And if you’re honest, haven’t you ever been in a similar situation? Papi really needs someone willing to give him a chance. A chance in a home setting. A chance to decompress. A chance to earn his trust. A chance for the good in Papi to reemerge. If you think you could be the person that Papi really needs right now, please stop by our shelter during business hours or text us at +1 (816) 463-9796. #pawportunities #scared
