Caregiving may let you postpone rest—but your body keeps the receipts. For a long time, I thought I could keep borrowing from myself. Skip the break. Work another shift. Push through the exhaustion. Handle one more problem. Tell myself, “I’ll rest later.” But after 17 years in caregiving, I learned something I wish I had understood much earlier: “later” eventually shows up. The exhaustion you keep swallowing doesn’t always disappear just because you kept functioning. The missed rest, the constant responsibility, the nights you kept going when you were already empty—it can accumulate. And sometimes what we call burnout is the moment we finally realize we have been spending from an account we never stopped to refill. That is why I talk so much about boundaries, rest, asking for help, and having a backup plan. Not because caregivers are weak—but because caregiving cannot continually take from one human being without that person needing restoration too. Caregivers, what have you been telling yourself you’ll deal with “later”—rest, boundaries, your health, your finances, or your own life? PLEASE SHARE WITH SOMEONE WHO MIGHT NEED THIS 💜 #FollowMeAcrossTheBridge #caregiverburnout
