I started asking them to be honest about what they do, where they do it, and to examine why them & a corporate candidate may have different interview expectations. A lot of retail, warehouse, & call center workers [non-derogatory, I promise] jumped into a conversation about a white-collar role at a Fortune 500 company. There’s a disconnect because they genuinely cannot comprehend that the social expectations are different in the industry that this conversation stemmed from. They think it’s “performative” because their jobs have only ever needed a body—ANY body. Being selective about iced coffee seems foreign to them because they can’t accept that we’re talking about 2 completely different work cultures.

Their reaction to being hypothetically told they shouldn’t bring coffee to interviews is the reason companies won’t hire people who bring coffee. Like if you’ll freak out over this what else will you freak out about?

ah yes, the etiquette of active listening aka more "corporate professionalism" BS based on nothing. so does that mean when they give me water from the fridge and I drink it I'm not actively listening anymore? or does it all somehow automatically change because it's an iced coffee? what if they offer me a hot coffee or hot tea is that okay? do not see how arbitrary this all is? and bringing up whatsboustim examples instead of staying on topic proves that you can't really make the argument for the topic at hand. because an interviewer isn't telling me something important that a friend would be telling me or a family member. they're not telling me about a recent death, or a breakup, or a miscarriage, or an illness, or anything like that. those are two completely separate and irrelevant situations. I don't get it because it's not real. because it is made up. because like I said in my last comment it stems from white supremacy and misogyny. and that's it. it's why they had to make the crown laws to protect black women because white bigoted scum would make up any tiny nit picky excuse to criticize black women for their hair clock, cleaning that the size would affect their work or if they had beads in it it was loud and distracting, or if it wasn't a natural hair color, or whatever BS excuse they wanted to use ... and that's the same with this. it's not real. and I have also been a hiring manager before, it's not that serious. if someone needs to go to the bathroom during an interview... why would I care? they're a person they need to go to the bathroom. if they want something to drink I will offer it because they're a person and they need to drink something, and sometimes interviews can last two to three hours depending on the job. why does it matter to you people this made up etiquette that isn't real? decades ago boomers thought you had to wear a suit and tie the interview to be a burger flipper, well also interviewing and smoking cigarettes and drinking. it doesn't matter that is the point. I'm not saying that we should all go into interviews right now and start drinking iced coffee, I am saying that it is a bygone stupid mindset that we should change

The way they are completely missing the point is actually scary. It’s not about the coffee itself. It’s about professional judgment and situational awareness. I’m an older millennial from the Midwest, and I was raised with the mentality that you earn opportunities through work ethic, professionalism, and understanding expectations. An interview is your opportunity to demonstrate those qualities before an employer knows anything else about you. Being able to recognize that a Fortune 500 interview calls for a different level of formality than an ordinary day at work is part of that judgment. The coffee is simply an example. The bigger question is whether someone can read the room.

As a leader if HR or a recruiter is not advancing qualified applicants for stupid criteria like coffee, im going to be furious. My team is working overtime to fill a gap, dont be an idiot.
