And if we’re fortunate enough to have them for many years, there may come a day when we are the ones caring for them. This deeply moving scene is from the 2011 film A Separation, written and directed by Asghar Farhadi. In the film, Nader is caring for his father, who is living with Alzheimer’s disease. Farhadi has shared that the image of a man bathing his father with Alzheimer’s was one of the images that inspired the story itself. There is something profoundly human about the reversal we witness here. The hands that once held us. The person who once protected us. The parent we once believed could do anything. And then, sometimes, life changes the roles. Caregiving can hold love, exhaustion, tenderness, grief, frustration and gratitude all at once. Caring for someone doesn’t always look beautiful. But sometimes the deepest expressions of love happen in the quiet moments no one else sees. At IPHI, we believe parenting and family well-being extend across the lifespan. The relationships we build, the care we give, and the dignity with which we treat one another matter, from our earliest years through our oldest.
