Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger Chesley Burnett “Sully” Sullenberger III is an American airline pilot who became internationally known for his actions during the emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 on January 15, 2009. Sully was the captain of an Airbus A320 that departed from LaGuardia Airport in New York. Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft struck a flock of birds, causing both engines to lose power. With the aircraft losing altitude and only a few seconds to make a critical decision, Sully remained focused on controlling the aircraft. Together with his first officer, Jeffrey Skiles, he assessed the situation and searched for a safe place to land. Sully ultimately decided that landing on the Hudson River was the safest available option. He carefully guided the aircraft toward the river and successfully performed an emergency landing on the water. All 155 people on board survived the accident. The event became widely known as the “Miracle on the Hudson.” Sully’s actions demonstrated the importance of experience, training, teamwork, and decision-making during an extreme emergency. His ability to remain focused under intense pressure played an important role in bringing the aircraft down safely. His career and the events of Flight 1549 have since made Chesley Sullenberger one of the most well-known pilots in modern aviation history.
