Moisture causes the seed to swell and activates the germination process, while allowing the seedbed to dry out can stop germination or kill newly emerging roots. Because new grass roots are very shallow, they cannot access moisture deep in the soil like established turf can. Frequent, light watering helps keep the top layer of soil consistently damp without washing away or drowning the seed.
