@weather_breakingnews: September 16, 2026 Phoenix metropolitan area, Arizona, USA On September 16, 2026, heavy monsoon downpours triggered flash floods in Arizona. The Phoenix area received over 50 mm of rain, with some parts of East Mesa recording nearly 100 mm. Roads were flooded, rescuers pulled a motorist from a vehicle trapped in the water, power outages occurred, and departures from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport were temporarily restricted due to the storms. A threat of dangerous flooding and mudflows persisted in northern Arizona. In Coconino County, approximately 38 mm of rain fell in the area affected by the Pocket Fire, creating a risk of mudflows in several canyons. In neighboring New Mexico, flooding near Newcomb resulted in the deaths of three people—two adults and a child. Police reported receiving a call overnight about people being swept away by the water. The bodies of the three victims were later recovered; preliminary findings indicate drowning as the cause of death.
