@exclusivemafia: On October 17, 2019, Mexican security forces moved to detain Ovidio Guzmán López, “El Ratón,” in Culiacán, setting off one of the most dramatic confrontations in the history of the Sinaloa Cartel. During the operation, Ovidio was recorded calling his older half-brother Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar, asking him to stop the violence because he had already surrendered. Mexican defense officials later said Iván refused to stand down as cartel gunmen mobilized across the city, blocking roads and attacking security forces in an effort to prevent Ovidio from being taken away. According to Mexican officials and reporting at the time, Iván played a central role in the effort to save his younger brother. Armed groups associated with Los Chapitos pressured government forces as the situation deteriorated, while soldiers and military families were reportedly threatened. Facing the possibility of further casualties, authorities ultimately ordered the operation halted and released Ovidio. The incident became known as the Culiacanazo, demonstrating how quickly Los Chapitos could mobilize armed support when one of El Chapo Guzmán’s sons was threatened with capture. Ovidio remained free until Mexican forces arrested him again in January 2023.
