My baby had a short nap day. I moved bedtime to 6pm instead of 7:30pm. She slept until 7am. I have done this every short nap day since. ⠀ 1️⃣ Total daily sleep target is the number that governs night sleep quality. When naps fall short — a catnap instead of a 1.5-hour nap, or a skipped nap — the deficit accumulates as sleep debt. By bedtime, a baby running 60 to 90 minutes of nap debt has elevated cortisol, a compressed sleep window, and a higher risk of early morning waking. Moving bedtime earlier by 30 to 60 minutes converts the nap deficit into additional night sleep. ⠀ 2️⃣ The mathematics: a 5-month-old with a daily sleep target of 14 hours, sleeping 10 hours at night and 4 hours across two naps. On a short nap day where they only achieve 2.5 hours of nap sleep — they are running 1.5 hours of deficit. If you hold the 7:30pm bedtime, that deficit accumulates. If you move bedtime to 6pm, you are offering 1.5 additional hours of night sleep opportunity. Most of it will be used. ⠀ 3️⃣ The early bedtime does not cause early morning waking. This is the most common fear. Early morning waking is caused by sleep deficit and overtiredness — both of which are present on a short nap day and made worse by a late bedtime. An earlier bedtime on a short nap day almost always produces either the same or a later morning wake time. ⠀ 4️⃣ The rule: for every 30 minutes of missed nap sleep, move bedtime 20 minutes earlier. Cap the early bedtime at 6pm regardless of nap shortfall. Below 6pm and circadian biology begins working against you — it is too early for the melatonin ramp to be in full effect. ⠀ This is the exact reason I started using an app called Napcue. It learns my baby's real patterns, tracks wake windows automatically, and gives me a heads up when the sleepy window is about to open so we're not crashing past it. Bedtime went from feeling like a guessing game to being a quiet notification on my phone. ⠀ Link in bio @napcueapp 💜 #babysleep #shortnap #bedtime #babysleeptips #newmom
