I was watching the show ‘Paradise’ recently when a scene made me press pause—literally. The character Cal is talking to a woman named Sinatra. It’s been a year since her son, Dylan, passed. He asks how she’s doing. She says she’s fine. But instead of leaving it there—he brings up a memory. He says Dylan’s name. And in that moment, everything changes. Her face softens. Her shoulders relax. A smile fights its way through the sorrow. For the first time in what feels like forever, someone asked about him. Not just about her grief. But about his life. At the end of the scene, she turns and says: “Thanks for asking about Dylan. It’s been a long time since someone talked about him with me.” That line hits hard. Because when you’ve lost someone, you notice those moments—the ones most people miss. You notice when someone remembers. When they speak their name. When they’re brave enough to let your love and loss take up space. Here’s what no one tells you about grief: People stop talking about them. Not because they don’t care—but because they don’t know if they can. They’re afraid it’ll upset you. Afraid they’ll say the wrong thing. But silence doesn’t soothe a grieving heart. Remembrance does. Saying their name doesn’t reopen the wound. It tends to it. It says, “I care. I know how much they meant to you.” Psychologist Adam Grant writes: “When someone is grieving, a powerful way to show you care is to ask about the person they lost. It gives them a chance to express their love, honor their legacy, and reconnect with the joy they felt together.” So the next time you want to support someone grieving, try this: “Tell me about them.” Ask what were they like? What’s your favorite memory? And then—just listen. Let them light up. Let them cry. Let them smile. Let them remember. Watch their face change. How their body relaxes. How their pain makes room for pride. How a piece of them comes back alive—because love, when spoken aloud, has a heartbeat. That’s what grief is. Love refusing to let go. A story that still needs to be told. And memory? That’s where that love continues to live. Saying their name out loud—that’s how we keep them here. #MentalHealth #mentalhealthmatters #grief #griefjourney #healing #missyou #support #empathy #compassion #Love #youarenotalone #griefandloss
