DAVID ESCAPED BY WISDOM AND FOUND REFUGE AT THE CAVE OF ADULLAM
1. David received Goliath’s sword from Ahimelech the priest.
After David left, he took the sword of Goliath, which had been kept behind the ephod, and departed.
📖 1 Samuel 21:8–10
2. David fled to Gath, but was recognized by the servants of the Philistine king.
They recognized him as David, the man concerning whom the people had sung, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.”
📖 1 Samuel 21:10–11
3. David became afraid and used wisdom to escape.
When David realized that he had been recognized and was now in danger, he changed his behavior before them and acted like a madman.
📖 1 Samuel 21:12–13
4. David acted so convincingly that saliva ran down his beard.
He scratched on the doors of the gate and allowed saliva to run down his beard.
📖 1 Samuel 21:13
5. The king rejected David and ordered his men to take him away.
Achish, the king of Gath, became angry and questioned why they had brought a madman before him, saying, “Have I need of mad men?”
📖 1 Samuel 21:14–15
6. David was sent away—and he escaped.
The king’s rejection became David’s opportunity to leave Gath alive. David therefore departed from there.
📖 1 Samuel 21:15–22:1
DAVID ESCAPED TO THE CAVE OF ADULLAM
7. David escaped to the cave of Adullam.
This is the important angle: David escaped from danger and found a place of refuge. Adullam became a place where David could hide when things became difficult.
📖 1 Samuel 22:1
8. David’s family came to meet him there.
When his brothers and his father’s entire household heard that David was at Adullam, they went down to him.
📖 1 Samuel 22:1
9. Distressed and broken people also gathered around David.
Those who were in distress, in debt, and bitter in soul gathered themselves to David.
📖 1 Samuel 22:2
10. David became their captain.
About 400 men gathered around David, and he became their leader.
📖 1 Samuel 22:2
