@murakdamso: Imagine medieval Europe without potatoes, tomatoes, chocolate, corn, coffee, or tea. Many foods that feel “traditionally European” today only became available after European contact with the Americas or through later global trade. Medieval diets relied heavily on grains and bread, while pasta already existed in various forms—so the popular story that Marco Polo simply “brought pasta from China” is far too simplistic. Bread was especially important, and its quality could reflect social and economic status. Fine white wheat bread was more highly valued, while coarser breads made from other grains were more common among poorer populations. Wealthier people also had greater access to meat and expensive spices Even urban life was different: medieval cities such as London faced serious sanitation and waste problems, including pollution of waterways. Medieval European cuisine was not simply “modern European food, but older.” It was a completely different food world. 🏰🍞 #creatorsearchinsights #medievalfacts #EuropeanHistory #FoodHistory #HistoryOfFood

They also had lots of crops that aren’t really around today! Like Skirret (a sweet root vegetable) and Ditander (a spicy root and leaf vegetable that black pepper replaced)

medieval ran from the 800s to 1600. its a long span of time and potatoes were introduced in the 1400s at their earliest. so yes chocolate and potatos were a medieval thing just a late/high medieval one

there were vegetables back then that are not available in grocery stores today bc it’s not easy to mass produce, but they ate it. I bet their diet was more interesting than we think

they basically ate what other medieval societies all over the world were eating at that time...limited ingredients indigenous to the area...really not a big deal.

Another fun fact: they divided food based on wealth hierarchy. Low in the ground = poor 🥕🧅🧄🐖higher off the ground = rich 🍓🍊🍇🐄 They also ate things like porpoise and whale 🐋
