Most people assume the #1 retirement regret is: "I wish I had saved more." And yes, saving matters. But the closer | get to retirement, the more I realize some of the regrets that matter most aren't just about how much money you saved. 1️⃣ Waiting too long to travel. So many people save those dream trips for "one day." Then health changes, someone gets sick, or life simply changes. Sometimes the cost of waiting ends up being greater than the cost of going. 2️⃣ Not building a second source of income. Not for luxury. Not to get rich. But to have breathing room. Even a little additional income can take some pressure off your retirement savings and give you more choices. Travel. Hobbies. Time with family. Or simply not having to worry quite so much about every unexpected expense. This is a big reason I decided to start building something outside of my paycheck before I retire. 3️⃣ Letting friendships fade after leaving work. After 35+ years in healthcare, I know how much of our daily interaction comes from the people we work with. When the job goes away, that connection can too. Having friends, hobbies, family and community outside of work matters more than we sometimes realize. 4️⃣ Planning for retirement, but not for purpose. We spend so much time asking, "Will | have enough?" But I think there's another question we need to ask: "What do I actually want my life to look like when I get there?" I don't just want to retire FROM something. I want to retire TO something. More time with my kids and grandkids. More travel. More warm, sunny days. More freedom over my time. And something that still gives me purpose. Personally, l'd rather have more options and enjoy more of my healthy years than spend forever waiting for some "perfect" retirement number that may never come.
