It’s totally normal for kids to say ‘no’ when they don’t want to do something!. But when it’s something we have to do, whether they want to or not, I have found it easiest to... First: Give a time warning before moving on. I help him understand that we only have a few more minutes to do what he wants to do, and then I explain to him that we will be all done. Second: Hold firm to the time limit I set. When the time’s up, the time’s up. I am not going to get caught in a cycle of “ok, 2 more minutes” over and over, until it’s gone on too long that I eventually snap. Third: Redirect with positive language and support. Like I said, it’s okay for kids to say no. But it’s not okay for my kids to have a complete meltdown and throw tantrums when told no. One of the best ways I’ve found to help this, is to remain positive and happy.
