If you have fatty liver disease, hepatitis, cirrhosis, elevated liver enzymes, or another liver condition, supplements may affect you differently than they affect someone with a healthy liver. These five deserve extra caution: 1. Concentrated green tea extract Brewed green tea is not the concern. High-dose extracts—especially when taken while fasting—can place additional oxidative stress on liver cells. 2. Turmeric or curcumin supplements Turmeric used in food is generally safe. But highly concentrated formulas, particularly those containing piperine to increase absorption, may rarely trigger liver injury in susceptible people. 3. Ashwagandha Rare cases of cholestatic liver injury have been reported. If your liver function is already impaired, processing the supplement and recovering from an unexpected reaction may be more difficult. 4. Preformed vitamin A Unlike water-soluble vitamins, vitamin A can accumulate in the liver. High doses or prolonged use may worsen inflammation and contribute to fibrosis. 5. High-dose niacin The amount found in a multivitamin is usually not the issue. Therapeutic doses—especially certain sustained-release formulations—can significantly elevate liver enzymes and damage liver cells. This does not mean these ingredients are harmful to everyone. Your diagnosis, dose, formulation, medications, alcohol intake, and other supplements all affect the risk. If you want to see the supplements I truly take as a GI doctor with over 20 years of experience, check the link in my bio. I’ve selected them based on their ingredients, formulations, dosing, quality standards, and safety profiles. #fyp #healthcare #trending #gastroenterology #doctor
