DROUGHT RESPONSE INITIATIVES By the National and County Governments and Partners Today, H.E. Nathif Jama, Governor of Garissa County, officially flagged off the Drought Response Initiatives aimed at mitigating the ongoing drought situation and safeguarding livelihoods across the county. In response to the persistent drought conditions, coordinated interventions have been rolled out by the National Government, the County Government of Garissa, and development partners to cushion vulnerable households and protect livestock, which remains the backbone of the local economy. ⸻ NATIONAL GOVERNMENT Under the leadership of H.E. Nathif Jama and in collaboration with the State Department for ASALs: 	•	Distribution of 3,500 bales of hay to support livestock survival. ⸻ COUNTY GOVERNMENT OF GARISSA The County Government of Garissa has implemented the following measures: 	•	Assorted foodstuffs distributed to 2,910 households 	•	Distribution of 7,000 range cubes 	•	Distribution of 3,000 bales of hay 	•	Water trucking to 124 centres across the county 	•	Repair of 30 boreholes 	•	Distribution of water storage tanks: 	•	20 tanks (10,000 litres each) 	•	11 tanks (5,000 litres each) 	•	15 additional tanks pending distribution 	•	Vaccination of 300,000 small livestock since December to prevent disease outbreaks and safeguard livelihoods ⸻ DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS Islamic Relief 	•	Provision of 1,400 assorted food packages (one-month support) targeting households in Balambala and Lagdera Sub-Counties. Save the Children 	•	Cash assistance to 1,900 households, each receiving KES 7,000 per month for two months across 40 villages 	•	Water trucking services in 50 villages across Fafi, Lagdera, Dadaab, Balambala, and Township Sub-Counties 	•	Three-month nutrition outreach programme covering all sub-counties 	•	Distribution of 1,500 boxes of nutrition supplements to hospitals across the county ⸻ Conclusion These collective efforts demonstrate strong coordination between the National Government, Garissa County leadership, and humanitarian partners in mitigating the effects of drought, protecting livelihoods, and supporting vulnerable communities.
