The pipa is a traditional plucked string instrument of East Asia, with a history of over 2,000 years in China. The earliest instruments referred to as “pipa” appeared around the Qin Dynasty. Before the Tang Dynasty, “pipa” in Chinese was a general term for all short-necked lute-family instruments. In ancient times, there were two types of pipa: the four-string pipa (curved-neck pipa) and the five-string pipa (straight-neck pipa). The five-string pipa eventually fell out of use, but it is often depicted in the Dunhuang murals, where celestial beings (feitian) are shown playing it. The four-string pipa, on the other hand, evolved into various forms in China and Japan, many of which are still played today. The curved-neck four-string pipa shares a common origin with the Middle Eastern oud and the European lute, and their shapes are quite similar. The pipa’s resonator is shaped like a vertically halved egg and connects to a neck with a headstock that bends backward at nearly a right angle, forming its distinctive appearance. The straight-neck five-string pipa, believed to have originated in India, has a straight neck with no curvature. The only surviving five-string pipa is the 螺钿紫檀五弦琵琶 (Raden Zitan Five-String Pipa), housed in the Shōsōin Repository in Japan. The Chinese pipa spread to other parts of East Asia, giving rise to the Japanese biwa, Korean bipa, Vietnamese đàn tỳ bà, and Ryukyuan biwa. #🇨🇳 #ChineseSong #ChineseMusic #知否知否 #Pipa #琵琶
